DIY Makeover: How to Transform Your Hutch

Have you ever seen a piece of furniture on the side of the road, and thought ” That would be beautiful with a little sanding and some paint?” My thoughts exactly when I saw this hutch on the side of the road that said “FREE”. I knew just by looking at it that I could DIY makeover it and transform the hutch into something beautiful.

I don’t know about you, but when I find an unpolished piece of furniture and fix it up or paint it I have a new found appreciation for it. The finished piece ends up creating a sentimental feeling of accomplishment. I look at this hutch and feel proud that I was able to transform it into something I really love. Anyway, enough mushy emotional banter and onward to the DIY Makeover Hutch.

DIY Hutch Makeover: Prepping the Hutch

First things first, when redoing furniture is to:

  • Choose a dedicated space away from items you do not want to accidentally get paint on. (I use my spare room that we use as my office).

  • Make sure you lay down a sheet, or newspaper underneath the hutch so you do not get drips of paint on your floors. (I use the unwanted fliers we usually get in the mail.. its perfect for these projects!).

  • Wipe down the hutch to remove dust, dirt, or cobwebs (if it came from someone’s basement it needs a little dusting off).

  • Remove the drawers and remove the hardware on the drawers, and save them in a safe place. (you do not want to lose those!)

  • Sand the hutch lightly, just scratching up the surface a little so the paint will stick.

DIY Makeover: First Coat

  1. Lay the first coat on the hutch and drawers (This layer should not be a thick coat.)

  2. Lightly paint the first layer being careful not to put too much paint in the corners. ( You do not want any drips).

  3. Allow each layer to dry overnight before laying on the next coat of paint. ( rinse the paint brushes in water, to remove most of the paint and allow to air dry).

DIY Makeover: Second Coat

  1. Before painting the next coat, sand any drips that were created from the first layer.

  2. Next, paint another coat on the hutch. ( Again be careful of laying the paint on too thick.)

  3. Allow the hutch to dry overnight.

DIY Hutch Makeover: Putting it Together

  1. After allowing the hutch to dry, it is time to put the hardware back on.

  2. Wash the hardware with soap and water and dry well.

  3. Place the hardware in the drilled holes, and screw back in with a screwdriver.

  4. Your hutch is now finished. Admire and cherish it for years to come! I hope following these steps was helpful in your DIY Makeover: How to Transform Your Hutch. Enjoy!
